MINUTES OF MEETING – Tuesday, December 7, 2021

American Legion Post 1, 5400 East Yale Avenue, Denver, CO 80222

And remotely via Zoom

 

1.      Call to order – Joel Martin at 11:30 AM

a.      Eleven voting board members in attendance, making a quorum.

b.      Board members attending: Steve Best, Jace Johnson, Joel Martin, Tim Griesmer, Tyler Roden, Sam Thiessen, Chad Dalton, Mike Euperio, Lou Schroeder, Katie Wilson, Brian MacDonald

 

2.      Secretary’s Report/Approval of Minutes – Tim Griesmer

a.      There were no minutes from the October 6, 2021 board meeting.

 

3.      Treasurer’s Report – Brian MacDonald

a.      Total accounts are $28,654, up approximately $400 from the last meeting.

b.      There is approximately $2600 from last year’s WPLEC event that will be carried over for next year.

c.      The report was approved by a vote of 11-0.

 

4.      2022 Society Budget – Brian MacDonald

a.      The board reviewed the planned events, community services, award, gifts, and operations for 2022. The draft budget projects a loss of approximately $400 for 2022.

b.      The budget will include an SLE scholarship if it is needed.

c.      Admissions: Jace Johnson said he does not foresee a need to pay for college fairs anymore. It would be a better investment to hold our own Academy Day in the spring with representatives of the Academy and Congressional offices.

d.      The draft includes a separate budget for WPLEC, which will be held on April 1, 2022 at a new venue.

e.      Brian MacDonald will update the draft budget based on the discussion and send it out to the members of the board for review. It will be voted on at the January planning meeting.

 

5.      Admissions- Jace Johnson

a.      Appointments for the Class of 2026 will be coming out shortly. The class is expected to fill 1250 new cadet slots. Colorado should send 25-30 new cadets.

b.      Congressional interviews have been completed.

c.      About 30 offers are out already.

 

6.      Founder’s Day – Joel Martin

a.      Founder’s Day will be held on March 12, 2022 at the University Club.

b.      A speaker’s request has been submitted to USMA for either the Superintendent, Commandant, or Dean.

 

7.      Army-Navy Watch Party

a.      The watch party will be held December 11, 2021 at the Sport Column.

b.      Currently there are 144 RSVPs. Another reminder email will be sent out.

 

8.      WPLEC/LEADS – Joel Martin

a.      Joel Martin reviewed the WPLEC and LEADS programs.

b.      The Society will host a joint WPLEC/LEADS event on April 1.

c.      There is a goal of 100-120 high school juniors and 50 middle school students.

d.      Joel Martin is also organizing an outreach to underserved students.

e.      Jace Johnson volunteered to reach out to local MALOs for support.

 

9.      Other Business – Joel Martin

a.      Steve Best will be at USMA next week.

b.      Lou Schroeder said that Bob Walcott is looking at reinstating the quarterly meetings for 2022. Lou is going to check on the availability of the new commander at Buckley AFB as a guest speaker.

 

10.   Annual Planning Meeting

a.      The Annual Planning Meeting will be held on January 25, 2022 beginning at 6:00pm. Location TBD.

The West Point Society of Denver Board of Directors met on October 6, 2021. There were no minutes recorded at the meeting.

The next board meeting will be held December 7, 2021.
